KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A Taliban commander in Panjwai district of Kandahar province in south Afghanistan was killed on Sunday, officials said Monday.

"A Taliban commander Hajji Agha alias Hajji Amir was killed during an operation in Zangabad village of Panjwai district on Sunday," a member of Kandahar's Provincial Council Hajji Agha Lalai told Xinhua.

NATO-led forces in southern Kandahar province also said that a Taliban sub-commander was killed during an operation in Zangabad village of Panjwai district on Sunday but did not identify his name.

Meantime, a Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, in talks with media via telephone from an unknown location, rejected the claim, saying no Taliban commander has been killed over the past week.
