JERUSALEM, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Israel is on high alert following the deadly high sea showdown between the Jewish state and pro- Palestinian activists on board a Gaza-bound aid convoy, which claimed more than 10 civilian lives.

"We raised the security level all over the country," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told Xinhua on Monday.

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman said earlier that measures have been taken to strengthen security, including closing checkpoints along the border with Gaza.

Israeli communities adjoining Gaza have been ordered to prepare shelters, for fear of a resumption of rocket fire, sources told Xinhua on Monday.

Roads towards the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and other controversial areas were blocked by police, according to a report of local news service Ynet.

IDF units along northern and southern borders were on alert against possible escalations, with off-duty soldiers summoned to their posts.
