RAMALLAH, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian political observers doubted that the visit of the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to Israel and the Palestinian territories would be a basic "motive" to revive the stalled peace negotiations with the Palestinians within the coming few days.

However, they expressed hope that this visit might be "an essential step of progress" to oblige the right-wing Israeli government to abide by the international resolutions of the U.N. Security Council. They said Ban's visit has just aimed at expressing what the International Quartet had reiterated.

They said the visit of Ban "is not more than a reiteration of what the International Quartet issued during its meeting held in Moscow on Friday which called the two sides to hold direct talks and reach a peace deal within 24 months, end the Israeli occupation and establish the future Palestinian state.

Ban arrived on Saturday in West Bank city of Ramallah, where he held talks with Palestinian premier Salam Fayyad, as Palestinian protests continued in different West Bank areas. A Palestinian was killed and two injured on Saturday during clashes with Israeli soldiers near Nablus.
