UN appeals to int'l community for maintaining aid to Haiti

SANTO DOMINGO, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations special representative in Haiti on Wednesday called upon the international community to maintain its aid and assistance toward the Caribbean island country devastated by the Jan. 12 earthquake.

The UN envoy, Edmond Mulet, said while reconstruction should be sped up more jobs need to be created to involve more local Haitians into the reconstruction of their country and economy.

"The Haitian people need to keep seeing a continuous dividend coming from international solidarity and also their presence in the country," Mulet told participants at a preparatory conference in Santo Domingo on Haiti reconstruction.

Mulet, who is also the civilian chief of the United Nations Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), ensured that the UN will keep on offering its full support for securing the humanitarian needs of Haiti, while preparing for a task of greater importance -- the reconstruction.

"The United Nations will carry on providing and meeting these humanitarian needs, assigning high priority to it, as we prepare for recovery efforts in medium and long terms," Mulet added.

The UN envoy also suggested that it is important to achieve a balance between the processing environment of the Haitian state and its economy.
