UN chief highlights importance of NPT review conference on 40th anniversary

UNITED NATIONS, March 5 (Xinhua) -- To mark the 40-year anniversary of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty's (NPT) entry into force on Friday, United Nations Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon stressed the importance of a successful Review Conference in May.

"In less than two months, the parties to the NPT will gather to review the operation of the treaty and to consider how to promote its full implementation, as well as its universality," he said in a statement. "I would like to underscore the importance of a successful review conference." Full story

Western countries press for more sanctions against Iran

UNITED NATIONS, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The United States, Britain and France, three veto-wielding permanent members of the UN Security Council, on Thursday urged new sanctions against Iran for refusing to stop its nuclear enrichment activities.

"In light of Iran's continued noncompliance with its obligations, this council must consider further measures to hold the government of Iran accountable," U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice told the 15-member body. Full story

Iran hopes IAEA chief to amend approach to Iran's nuclear program

TEHRAN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi said Tuesday that Iran hopes the chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano to amend his approach toward Iran's nuclear program, the local satellite Press TV reported.

Iran to test new smart bombs: commander

TEHRAN, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Air Force commander Hassan Shahsafi said Monday that his country will test new generation of smart bombs in near future, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The new bombs, dubbed Qased-2, are the upgraded generation of earlier-made 2000-pound Qased-1 bombs, the report said, adding that the new generation has advantages of farther-reaching capabilities, more accuracy and more destructive power. Full story

Iran pursuing plan of 20% uranium enrichment, still ready for fuel swap
