TEGUCIGALPA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Honduran Congress voted late on Tuesday to approve amnesties for both the military and former president Manuel Zelaya.
The amnesties will come into effect once official media have published the decree.
In another development, the country's supreme court found six generals innocent of abuse-of-power charges for ordering soldiers to escort Zelaya out of Honduras at gunpoint after last June's coup.
Zelaya had been charged with abuse of power and treason over his defiance of a supreme court order to cancel a referendum on changing the country's constitution.
The amnesty was debated and approved by the new congress.
The previous legislature failed to reach consensus on an amnesty in December last year.
Honduran President-elect Porfirio Lobo, who will be sworn in on Wednesday, said he had expected the amnesty to bail his country out of the political crisis it has endured since the coup.
Local analysts believe the congressional approval of the amnesty would facilitate Zelaya's exile to the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.
After the June 28 coup, then Congress Speaker Roberto Micheletti served as the de facto leader of the country.
Honduras held general elections on Nov. 29 last year as scheduled and opposition leader Lobo winning.
