BEIRUT, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Hezbollah members were said to have been put on high alert as Israeli troops continued to mass along the border with Lebanon, pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat reported Friday.
The newspaper cited well-informed Hezbollah sources as saying that the Lebanese Shiite group has ordered its members to be on " high alert in the event of a surprise Israeli operation against party headquarters and positions."
The daily newspaper added that the decision was taken after Israeli troops continued to mass along the border with Lebanon under the pretext of military maneuvers.
Hezbollah fought a devastating 34-day war with Israel in 2006. The group's chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed last week to "change the face of the region" in case of confrontation with Israel.
Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said Wednesday that he worried the Israeli intervention may create new conflict in the Middle East region after the recent overflights in Lebanese airspace.
Earlier, Lebanese President Michel Suleiman warned that Israel is a "permanent threat" to the country.
