BEIJING,Dec. 5 (Xinhuanet) – Australia’s ruling Labor Party has endorsed plans to open up uranium sales to India.

There was a deep divide within the Australian government on the bilateral nuclear agreement, as India is not party to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett, called for delegates to oppose the motion.

But, Australia’s Prime Minister, Julia Gillard promised the Indian Prime Minster that she would push for a change in uranium policy during their talks at the recent ASEAN summit. The move follows a landmark U.S. agreement to support the civil nuclear program in India, signed in 2008.
