BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A popular market in Hamburg was crowded with shoppers on Saturday morning after the government lifted the warning on tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce following a deadly E. coli outbreak.
German health officials warned the number of deaths from the world's worst E. coli outbreak may still increase, but they were hopeful that the worst was over. Health officials announced on Friday sprouts from a farm in northern Germany caused the outbreak that has killed 31 people, sickened nearly 3,100 and prompted much of Europe to shun vegetables in recent weeks.
The EU says it will offer farmers compensation of up to 210 million euro for the E. coli losses. Stall holders on Saturday said business was picking up, with vegetables back on people's shopping lists, though many shoppers still remain cautious about what they consume.
Customer Jessica Hemblen said, "I am still very cautious, because in the first place they said it's the cucumbers, and everyone stopped eating them, and now it's the sprouts. I'm not sure whether this is it, or whether it's not going to be something different again."
