BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhuanet) -- A short statement released by the Pakistani Foreign Office has confirmed the death of al Qaeda's head, Osama bin Laden, in a military operation conducted by US troops early Monday morning. The operation took place in a small mountain town near Islamabad. Pakistani armed forces add that they were not involved in the raid.
During the less than one-hour-long mission, US special forces reportedly killed bin Laden, one of his sons, a woman whose identity is yet to be confirmed, and three armed followers. Six children of the militant leader, his two wives, and four close friends, were also said to be detained.
One of the four US Cobra helicopters involved in the operation crashed before reaching the site in Abbotabad, amid conflicting accounts that it was shot down, or suffered mechanical failure.
