BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Plutonium has been detected in soil at five locations at the Fukushima number-one nuclear power plant, which was damaged by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The Kyodo News Agency quotes an official from the Tokyo Electric Power Company, who says the plutonium is believed to have been discharged from nuclear fuel at the plant.

Officials insist that the plutonium poses no threat to humans. But the power company says the discovery will not suspend work there. Contamination in Unit-two is due to a partial meltdown of the reactor core.

However, authorities say pressure inside the containers holding the reactors are stable. They're also saying it could take weeks to clear out the radioactive water.

The latest death toll stands at nearly 11-thousand, with more than 17-thousand still missing.
