BEIJING, March 20 (Xinhuanet) -- French warplanes attacked an air defense site in Tajura, about 10 kilometers east of the Libyan capital of Tripoli on Saturday night.

French planes also fired the first shots in the international military intervention, destroying tanks and armored vehicles in the region of the rebels' eastern stronghold, Benghazi.

France has 5 warplanes operating over Libya at the moment. The force comprised an AWACS reconnaissance plane and four attack aircraft, two Rafales and two Mirages.

An armed forces spokesman says the operation to halt Muammar Gaddafi's advance on rebel forces involved around 20 planes and an area 100 kilometers by 150, around the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

He added that France's Charles de Gaulle Aircraft Carrier will leave France for Libya on Sunday. A central command center for the operation will be established soon.
