BEIJING, July 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Right before the New Zealand National Pavilion celebrations started, the renowned New Zealand National Youth Choir presented a lavish concert to give visitors a prelude of their culture and art.
During the two-hour concert, the young artists performed a wide range of melodies... from Norwegian religious hymns to New Zealand ballads from the traditional Korean folk song Arrirang to a Welsh lullaby. To satisfy the audience even more, they performed a Hunan folk song in Chinese.
Founded in 1979, the ensemble is the most long-standing youth choir in New Zealand. Awarded the title "Choir of the World" in 1999, the choristers always present programs that reflect its diverse heritage and membership of the world community.
The ensemble's trademark versatility is a mixture of ancient and modern works, including pieces by New Zealand, Australian, and Asian composers.
The national kapa haka items are particular audience favorites, and sit beautifully alongside stirring improvisations, double choir works, folk songs of various nations and of course, the classics.
