PARIS, May 30 (Xinhua) -- World No. 2 Novak Djokovic was rewarded a semifinal berth without sweating after Italian Fabio Fognini decided to withdraw from the French Open due to a left thigh injury.
Fognini, 24 suffered the injury on Sunday, during his marathon match against Spain's Albert Montanes, who he defeated in 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 and 11-9 after four hours and 22 minutes.
"I was crying after the match for the pain," said Fognini who achieved his best Grand Slam result after the win in the round last 16 on Sunday."It's really difficult (to make this decision), but I think this is the best solution."
