RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Superior Court of Sports Justice announced on Saturday that they will seek to impose maximum punishment of four-year suspension on Brazilian soccer club Botafogo's star striker Jobson for doping.
The announcement came after the athlete admitted to using cocaine. On Jan. 19, Jobson was sentenced to a two-year suspension for failing two separate drug tests in the latter part of Botafogo 's campaign in the 2009 Brazilian championship. The substance found in the doping tests was cocaine.
However, after the sentencing, the athlete later confessed to using crack during the 2009 season. For this reason, the Superior Court of Sports Justice is seeking a maximum penalty against the player in order to deter any other such cases from happening in the future, extending his suspension to four years.
Jobson and his team of lawyers will have to appear in front of the court on Jan. 25 in order to avoid an increase his suspension. Jobson has declared that he intends on entering a drub rehabilitation center in order to kick his drug habits.
Should Jobson be found guilty and have his sentence augmented, he runs the risk of being banned from the sport due to his subsequent confession, considered by the court as a second instance of doping while playing.
