China to spend almost four times as much on water conservancy over next 10 years: official

CHANGCHUN, May 23 (Xinhua) -- China's investment in water conservancy projects from 2011 to 2020 is expected to reach 4 trillion yuan (615 billion U.S. dollars), almost four times as much as that spent during the past 10 years, a senior water official said Monday.

China's Minister of Water Resources Chen Lei said the country's water conservancy spending during the past five years reached 700 billion yuan, and about 363 billion yuan for the 2001-2005 period. Full story

China's drought-control center sends relief to thirsty Hunan, Hubei

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's drought-control headquarters has sent relief equipment to help combat droughts in Hunan and Hubei provinces on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in central China.

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) on Wednesday and Thursday sent water pumps, diesel-fueled power generators and water transportation facilities to the two provinces, said Shu Qingpeng, deputy head of the SFDH Office. Full story

Yangtze River diverted to ease drought in central China

YUEYANG, Hunan, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Water from China's Yangtze River was diverted to central China's Hunan and Hubei provinces on Wednesday to ease a lingering drought in the region.

About 300,000 people living in the Huarong River valley near the city of Shishou in Hunan have had difficulty obtaining enough water for daily use, said Xue Jianhua, an official with the water resource bureau of Huarong County. Full story

China's Three Gorges Dam releases more water to ease downstream drought

YICHANG, May 16 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest hydropower project, increased water discharge for a second time Monday to help ease a severe drought in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.

The dam in the central city of Yichang accelerated its discharge rate to 9,500 cubic meters per second, about 2,900 cubic meters faster than its inflow speed, according to Zhao Yunfa, an engineer at the dam. Full story

China's Yangtze River sees near-record low water levels on drought

WUHAN, May 14 (Xinhua) -- A severe drought has pushed down the water levels in the middle section of Yangtze River, China's largest, to near record low, local authorities said Saturday.
