MADRID, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Environment Minister Elena Espinosa on Tuesday called for global efforts to preserve biodiversity.
"Each and every citizen of the world has to have a commitment in the fight against the loss of biodiversity," said Espinosa at the opening of the two-day European conference entitled "Post-2010 goal and vision for biodiversity."
"It is going to be one of the priorities of the Spanish presidency of the European Union," added Espinosa.
The conference, which opened Tuesday in Madrid, will discuss the efforts in providing international instruments and platforms to strengthen links between politics and science, with an aim to give a greater knowledge about the economic consequences of biodiversity loss.
"These questions define the actions of the Spanish presidency and we are going to make a huge effort to achieve the objective of preserving a richness that we cannot deny to future generations," she said.
Experts and representatives from about 45 countries and international organizations such as UNEP, UNESO and the OECD attended the conference.
