BEIJING, March 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Scottish-Austrailan Norrie May-Welby, 48, has become the world's first officially genderless person, as media reported on Tuesday.
He was born a man but had a sex change operation in 1990 at the age of 28.
New South Wales government officials amended his birth certificate to reflect "no specific sex" after doctors were not able to make a gender determination.
"There is no reason for still insisting that our legal identity must include a public statement about a very private matter, our sex," May-Welby wrote in a blog.
May-Welby said: “The concepts of man or woman don’t fit me. The simplest solution is not to have any sex identification.”
The UK Gender Trust welcomed the case. A spokesman said: “Many people like the idea of being genderless.”
May-Welby was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
