Project "CAN 2012 without AIDS" to be launched in Gabon on Jan. 6

LIBREVILLE, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Gabon's First Lady Sylvia Bongo Ondimba announced on Thursday that she will launch her "CAN 2012 without AIDS" project on Jan. 6, 2012.

The Gabonese First Lady was speaking in Libreville during the occasion to mark the World AIDS Day.

She said the objective of her project is defeat AIDS by a score of 3-0 which means zero new contamination, zero discrimination and zero deaths caused by HIV/AIDS.

The campaign which will run in Gabon throughout the year 2012, will be carried out with the support of UNAIDS as well as reknown football stars.

Gabon with a population of 1.5 million people, officially has 63,000 HIV positive people. About 40 percent of the population has not yet tested to know their status.

The country's HIV prevalence rate fell to 5.2 percent in 2009 from a high of 5.9 percent in 2007. About 6,000 people are currently on anti-retroviral medication.

Currently, access to medication for HIV/AIDS patients in Gabon is free. In 1990s, one required about 450,000 Fcfa to access the anti-retrovirals.
