TEGUCIGALPA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-three people have died of dengue fever in Honduras this year, according to statistics released by the Honduran Health Ministry on Monday.

The number is nearly double last year's toll of 12.

Health Minister Arturo Bendana said 22,000 infection cases were reported this year and 705 were the more dangerous hemorrhagic type.

It was reported that regular meetings were held to study protection measures and the financial ministry was asked by President Porfirio Lobo to provide financial support for controlling the disease.

Dengue fever is a acute virus disease spread through mosquitos, divided into common dengue and hemorrhagic dengue, which has a higher death rate.
