ISLAMABAD, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan launched a three-day round of a synchronized anti-polio campaign to vaccinate millions of children, officials said Tuesday.
Despite some achievements in its fight against poliomyelitis, still a number of cases have been reported this year in Pakistan, Doctor Mohsin Shah, a Public Health Specialist told Xinhua.
"If one looks at the current ratio of polio cases in Pakistan, there is no big difference between the situations in early 90s and present circumstances," Shah said.
He said Pakistan is striving hard to eradicate polio from the country for the last 16 years but the authorities concerned have failed to control the viral disease.
Shah said that the polio drops strengthen human intestines capabilities against polio, adding that in most of the countries of the world polio has been eradicated.
Media reports suggested that a number of new cases have been reported in the last two months. The vaccination campaign to eradicate the virus from Pakistan started in 1994.
