MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Forty-four people were killed when a Tu-134 passenger plane, belonging to the Rusaero airline, crash-landed in Russia's northern republic of Karelie, local media reported Tuesday.
Another eight people were severely injured in the accident which occurred at about 11:55 p.m. Moscow time (1955 GMT) Monday.
Since 1971, Tu-134 passenger planes have been involved in over 20 accidents which were caused by various factors, including engine failure, landing problem and terrorist act.
The following are some major accidents in the last two decades:
On March 17, 2007, six people were killed and at least 26 others injured in the crash-landing of a Tu-134 passenger plane belonging to Russia's UTair in the western city of Samara in Russia.
On July 10, 2006, a Tu-134 plane carrying a Russian naval delegation crash-landed in an airport in Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula after engine failure. The engine caught fire, but no one was killed in the incident.
On Aug. 24, 2004, a Russian Tu-134 airliner en route from Moscow to the southern city of Volgograd disappeared off radar screens some 40 minutes after taking-off. All 44 passengers and crew aboard the plane were killed in the incident, which was later confirmed by authorities as being caused by terrorist bombing.
On Sept. 3, 1997, a Tu-134 plane of Vietnam Airlines carrying 66 passengers and crew crashed at the Phnom Penh international airport, killing 63 people, while only three others survived.
On Dec. 3, 1995, about 50 people died when a Tu-134 of Azerbaijan's state-owned AZAL airways crashed due to double engine failure during an internal flight.
On July 16, 1993, about 70 passengers escaped death when a Tu-134 aircraft belonging to the Nigeria Airways burst into flames after colliding with a vehicle on the runway at the Lagos International Airport.
On Aug. 27, 1992, a Tu-134 airliner of aeroflot crashed while landing at Ivanovo, a town northeast of Moscow, killing all 82 people aboard.
