DHAKA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's capital Dhaka city dwellers are busy with shopping ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest festivals celebrated after Ramadan.

With the Eid festival coming nearer, many people were seen in New Market, one of the busiest markets in the capital, on Thursday to buy different commodities or gifts either for themselves or family members.

For the shoppers, it is the best time to make money. Dipu, a shopper selling traditional dresses in the market, told Xinhua his business is very good now and more people come to choose dresses for holiday.

Dipu said over the last one week, he made over 100,000 taka ( about 1429 U.S. dollars) as gross profit every day which is 5 times the usual time.

"I expect the momentum will last until Eid which is to be celebrated either on Friday or Saturday," he said.

Eid will be observed in Bangladesh on Friday if moon is sighted on Thursday night, otherwise it will be celebrated on Saturday.

Pink City, a shopping mall in Ghulshan, a posh area of Dhaka also saw a lot of customers on Thursday.

Saima Haider, who came to Pink City for shopping, told Xinhua she bought gifts for each of her family members.

"Eid is a big holiday. I want to send gifts to all my family members and make they happy," she said.

Eid is not only a holiday for shopping, but also a holiday for family reunion. According to estimation, around 5 million people from Dhaka will celebrate the holiday in their hometowns.
