NAY PYI TAW, April 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Myanmar's newly-elected President U Thein Sein here on Monday, pledging that China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity for the development of its southwestern neighbor.
Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said China supports Myanmar's development mode chosen in accordance with the country's own conditions.
He extended congratulations to U Thein Sein for being elected as Myanmar's new president, expressing hope that under the leadership of U Thein Sein and the new government, the country will make greater achievement in its economic construction and national development.
Jia also expressed sympathy to the president over the strong earthquake that hit Myanmar recently.
In recent years, the two countries have maintained frequent exchanges of high-level visits and made major achievements in various sectors, said Jia, also taking note of a series of important cooperation projects between the two sides.
He also voiced appreciation of Myanmar's firm adherence to the one-China policy.
Jia stressed that the further development of China-Myanmar relations conforms to the fundamental interests of the two countries and the two peoples, adding that China is ready to make joint efforts with Myanmar to push the good-neighborly and friendly ties to a new high.
Pointing to the fact that China and Myanmar share a borderline of more than 2,200 kilometers, Jia said safeguarding peace and stability in the border area conforms to the interests of both sides.
Jia expressed the belief that Myanmar's new government will make utmost efforts to safeguard the peace and stability in the border area and create a stable environment for Myanmar's economic development.
During the meeting, U Thein Sein noted that Jia is the first foreign leader to visit Myanmar following the establishment of the new government.
U Thein Sein said Myanmar's policy toward China remains unchanged after the new government was formed, saying that under the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, Myanmar will maintain friendly exchanges with China and push forward the implementation of major economic cooperation projects.
Jia arrived in Myanmar on Saturday for a 4-day visit. Myanmar is the first stop of Jia's three-nation tour, which will also take him to Australia and Samoa.

China's top political advisor meets Myanmar Union Parliament speaker
NAY PYI TAW, April 4 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Myanmar's speaker of the Union Parliament U Khin Aung Myint here on Monday, saying China is willing to make joint efforts with Myanmar to lift the bilateral ties to a new high.
Jia, who arrived in Myanmar for a 4-day visit, said China attaches great importance to China-Myanmar relations and is ready to make joint efforts with the neighboring country to push bilateral ties forward towards an all-round and in-depth development in various sectors. Full story
