ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from the massive mudslide in Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, has risen to 1,270 as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, with 474 still missing, local disaster relief headquarters said.

Life returning to normal in mudslide-hit Zhouqu

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Life is returning to normal and survivors are trying to walk out from the shadow of losing their beloved ones eight days after a devastating landslide hit the county.

About 500 people have been temporarily housed in 103 tents in the campus of the No 1 Middle School, which is situated on a hill on the north side of Zhouqu. Two television sets in the teaching building and many radios placed inside tents are connecting people with the outside world.  Full story

Supply of daily necessities in mudslide zone adequate: official

BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The supply of daily necessities for mudslide survivors in northwest China's Gansu Province is adequate for now as a large number of relief materials have arrived in the disaster zone, Minister of Civil Affairs Li Liguo said here Monday.

"Daily necessities such as instant noodles and bottled water are abundant in resettlement areas. Tents have been equipped with quilts and makeshift beds," Li said in an interview with Xinhua.  Full story
