The government has issued a series of guidelines on environmental protection.
It released its first plan on the protection of drinking water sources in June and its first guidance on the joint prevention and control of air pollution in May.
About 600 officials and scholars from around the world are participated in the two-day forum, including Under Secretary General of the United Nations Achim Steiner, director of State Administration of Energy Zhang Guobao, director of China Meteorological Administration Zheng Guoguang, chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Rajendra K. Pachauri, and Hu Angang, a leading economist at Tsinghua University.
Under the theme "Environmental Changes and Urban Responsibilities," they will address the topics of international cooperation and policies for climate change, the green economy and innovative production models, the role of the public in building green cities, sustainable buildings, and sustainable lifestyle and consumption patterns.

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- China's large cities should no longer construct coal-fired power plants, but give priority to the development of low-carbon energy, said Zhang Guobao, director of the National Energy Administration, at a forum of the Shanghai World Expo on Saturday.
"I have suggested the demolition or relocation of four coal-fired power plants in Beijing's urban area, including one in the central business district," said Zhang, who is also vice director of the National Development and Reform Commission.Full story

NANJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Officials of Chinese and international environment agencies Saturday asserted that economic development should no longer be at the cost of environmental degradation.
Achim Steiner, Under Secretary General of the United Nations, said at the Environmental Protection and Urban Responsibilities Forum in Nanjing, that China had achieved extraordinary economic development over the past three decades, but also suffered from great ecological losses.Full story
