Senior leader conveys condolences to families of peacekeepers killed in Haiti quake

BEIJING, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang on Tuesday visited representatives from families of eight Chinese peacekeeping police officers, who were killed in the Haiti earthquake last week, at the Beijing Capital International Airport.

Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, conveyed condolences to the police officers' relatives on behalf of the CPC Central Committee, the State Council, and the CPC Central Committee General Secretary Hu Jintao.

Chinese mourn police killed in Haiti earthquake

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of Chinese people, including Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, on Monday expressed their respect for the eight peacekeeping police officers who died in the Haiti earthquake as their bodies were on the way back to China.

The premier expressed his condolences in his call to the Ministry of Public Security Monday morning, according to a notice posted on the ministry's official website.Full story

Caskets of fallen Chinese officers flown home

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Escorted by their fellow comrades, coffins bearing the remains of Chinese police officers killed in Haiti's apocalyptic earthquake embarked on their homeward journey early Sunday at Port-au-Prince airport.

Among those eight heroes whose lives were claimed, six of them arrived in Haiti as peacekeepers only four days before the most destructive earthquake of the past two centuries in Haiti's history destroyed their offices inside the headquarters of the UN Stabilization Mission in Port-au-Prince.Full story
