Singapore awards six water companies in research funding

SINGAPORE, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The Singapore government said on Wednesday that six water companies will each receive about 1 million Singapore dollars (0.72 million U.S. dollars) worth of research funds to carry out research and development to improve their product offerings to the global water industry.

Of the six companies, two are Singapore-based companies while the rest are strongly represented by offices in Singapore.

The awarded companies will define the requirements for research and development for a new technological capability to meet their business needs, and form and lead an research and development team to carry out the research work.

By 2015, the Environment and Water sector is expected to contribute 1.7 billion Singapore dollars (1.23 billion U.S. dollars) to Singapore's gross domestic product and an employment of 11,000 people, with a majority in professional and skilled categories.
