Honda adds more woes to Japan's automakers with massive recall

TOKYO, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Japanese automaker Honda added a further 437,700 cars, including 4,000 in Japan, to a recall over a faulty airbag in some of its models on Wednesday, just a day after Toyota started repairs on hundreds of thousands of its vehicles over a possible fault with the brakes in some of its automobiles.

The Honda recall has now spread to around 1 million cars, and is over a problem that can lead its airbags deploying too much pressure when inflated, which could cause injury.

The cars affected by Wednesday's recall are the 2001 and 2002 models of the Accord, Civic, Odyssey, Pilot, CL, CR-V and 2002 Acura TL vehicles.

"Honda is announcing this recall expansion to encourage all owners of these vehicles to take their vehicle to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda that their vehicle is affected. Notification to customers will start within this month," the company said in a statement.

Honda had previously recalled more than half a million cars by July 2009 over the same problem.

The company will recall 378,758 cars in North America, and approximately a further 60,000 from around the world.

The recall will add further damage to the reputation of Japanese automakers overseas. Since last year, Toyota has had to recall millions of vehicles worldwide over faults in its cars, and Akio Toyoda has apologized publicly twice this month for problems in his company's cars.
