TOKYO, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed down Tuesday on a stronger yen versus the U.S. dollar and Japan Airlines filing for bankruptcy.
The benchmark Nikkei-225 index fell 90.18 points, or 0.83 percent to 10,764.90.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped 7.79 points, or 0.81 percent, to 949. 76.
Trading volume on the main section came to 2,280.81 million shares, down from Monday's 2,377.24 million.
The TSE's Second Section index lost 0.36 point, or 0.02 percent, to 2,105.53 on a volume of 59.96 million shares. On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term March Nikkei 225 index futures contract was down 80 points at 10,760.
