Case Prototype
The Rhône-Alpes region of France has exhibited a rich, innovative spirit in such fields as urban planning and lifestyle, which is best seen in their urban lighting system – especially in the towns of Lyon and Saint-Etienne.
In the past 15 years, Lyon has implemented a lighting plan for the whole city, with the goal of highlighting the artistic features of historic architecture, urban landscapes and public spaces. To bring both the urban lighting technology and art into play, Lyon holds an annual “Light Festival” forum, which facilitates deliberation on many issues including: sustainable lighting planning, impact of lighting on people’s daily life, application of new materials & technologies and promotion of energy-efficient light devices, as well as light pollution with night landscapes.

Saint-Etienne has carried out diversified regional lighting plans with respect to its environment and infrastructure, endeavoring to improve the sense of identification among the whole area through innovative lighting methods. For this purpose, Saint-Etienne has created a special “Charter for Public Illumination and Building & Garden Lighting”. This charter has gained wide recognition among European countries and the International Association for Urban Illumination. In addition it has been recommended as a model for lighting planning.
Case Highlights
How brilliant could urban lights be? The question is answered at the Rhône-Alpes’ UBPA of Expo 2010. Cleverly translating the green illumination technology into an “Urban Energy-efficient Lighting System”, the exhibit will present a charming artistic night landscape. Drawing on the Rhône-Alpes region’s experience of construction, the case will shed more light on the profound theme of “Better City, Better Life”.

Lights will be arranged to create patterns, putting on a unique “Light Show” in the Rhône-Alpes’ UBPA. For example, one pattern will be “fireflies”, “flying” downwards, and then all over the sky. This could be a must-see “Light Show” for visitors.
