More die from selfies than shark attacks: report

English.news.cn   2015-09-23 18:35:44

BEIJING, Sept. 23 (Xinhuanet) – A 66-year-old tourist has tragically died after falling down stairs while attempting to take a selfie at the Taj Mahal in India lately.

Earlier in the month, a man accidentally killed himself while posing for an Instagram selfie of him holding a gun. There are a few other reported instances of tourists in Yellowstone Park being gored while attempting to take selfies with bison.

Sadly, these types of stories are far more common that people may ordinarily assume.

According to new figures, 12 people globally so far this year have died while snapping a selfie on their camera, whereas only eight people have been killed as a result of a shark attack.

Russian interior ministry is reportedly to have issued a road sign-style leaflet and video warning that taking a "cool selfie could cost you your life."

Two cases happened in Russia. In January, two young men blew themselves up in the Urals in Russia while taking a selfie holding a hand grenade with the pin pulled out.

In May, a teenager in the Ryazan region died while attempting to take a selfie as he climbed on a railway bridge and accidentally came into contact with live wires.
