WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States on Tuesday confirmed the death of an American female hostage held by the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
"It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the death of Kayla Jean Mueller," President Barack Obama said in a White House statement.
Mueller, a 26-year-old humanitarian aid worker, was captured in Syria in August 2013. IS last week claimed she had been killed in a Jordanian airstrike. However, U.S. officials at the time said they could not confirm it.
"We are heartbroken to share that we've received confirmation that Kayla Jean Mueller, has lost her life," Mueller's parents said in a statement, "She dedicated the whole of her young life to helping those in need of freedom, justice, and peace."
The U.S. officials right now could not confirm the cause of Mueller's death or when she died. But Obama pledged to "find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla's captivity and death."

DAMASCUS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic State (IS) militant group claimed on Friday that an American female hostage was killed by Jordanian airstrikes against IS positions in Syria's northern province of al-Raqqa, a monitoring group reported.
Citing a report posted on Twitter by the IS, the SITE monitoring group said that Kayla Jean Mueller was killed when she was buried beneath the rubble of a building, which had collapsed as a result of a Jordanian airstrikes against IS in al-Raqqa. Full story
State department spokeswoman: U.S. willing to offer Jordan more weapons
WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- U.S. State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Friday that the Obama administration was willing to provide more weapons to the Jordanian government to fight against the extremist group "Islamic State" (IS).
"We are absolutely expediting any requests they have for military assistance and we're going to keep working with them on the shared fight together. This is something we're committed to," said Harf in an interview with CNN on Friday. Full story
EU launches new strategy for Syria, Iraq to face IS threat
BRUSSELS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) has launched its first comprehensive strategy to tackle the crises in Syria and Iraq, the European Commission announced Friday.
