WASHINGTON, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. and partner-nation military forces continued to conduct airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) forces in Syria and Iraq over the past two days, U.S. Defense Department said on Monday.
During the period, fighter and bomber aircraft conducted a total of 14 airstrikes in Syria, and fighter aircraft conducted six airstrikes in Iraq, according to a statement released by the Defense Department.
Airstrikes in Syria destroyed IS' 12 fighting positions, two large units, five crude oil collection points, two armored vehicles and a shipping container, the statement said.
Meanwhile, airstrikes against IS in Iraq destroyed four large units, two excavators and three vehicles.
Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Britain. Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Syria include the United States, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
BAGHDAD, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Sunday praised Australia's support for his country in its fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group.
Abadi made the comments in a statement following his meeting with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott, who arrived in the Iraqi capital Baghdad earlier on Sunday to discuss bilateral ties and efforts to fight the IS.Full story
