WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. and its partner-nation fighter and bomber aircraft have conducted seven airstrikes on Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria and Iraq, the Combined Joint Task Force said on Sunday.

Six of the airstrikes targeted IS positions near Kobani, Syria, while one struck near Mosul, Iraq, the task force said in a statement, adding that the strikes were launched on Saturday.

The airstrikes near Kobani hit an IS tactical unit and an IS fighting position, and destroyed three IS vehicles, four IS buildings, and two IS staging areas, the statement said, adding that the airstrike near Mosul also hit an IS tactical unit.

The U.S.-led strikes are part of an operation to eliminate the terrorist group, which controls land in Syria and Iraq and has declared an Islamic caliphate, and the threat it poses to Iraq, the region and the wider international community.

Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, the statement said. Coalition nations conducting airstrikes in Syria include the United States, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, it added.
