ISLAMABAD, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Pakistani security forces have killed 16 militants and injured 20 others in a tribal region, the army said Saturday.
An army spokesman said the government troops attacked a gathering of militants in a mountainous region in Orakzai tribal region.
"Last night security forces ambushed a large assembly of terrorists on the border of Orakzai and Khyber agency in Khazana Kandao and Shirin Darra," a statement from the military's Inter- Services Public Relations said.
"An intense battle took place, in which 16 terrorists were killed and 20 injured," it said.
Four soldiers were also injured in the exchange of fire, the army said.
The security forces have stepped up offensives against the militants after Taliban's deadly attack on an army-run school last week that killed 150 children and their teachers.
