TEHRAN, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Iran on Thursday started massive military drills in the country's southern waters, Press TV reported.
The six-day military exercise, involving army, naval and air force units and dubbed "Mohammad Rasoulallah," or the messenger of Allah, will cover an area from the east of Strait of Hormuz to the southern parts of Gulf of Aden, it said.
One objective of the maneuvers is to boost Iran's defense capabilities, Brig. Gen. Abdolrahim Mousavi, the second-in-command of the Iranian army, was quoted as saying.
The army also wants to convey a message of peace and friendship to neighboring states through the drills, Mousavi said.
