SANAA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- A Houthi member was killed and two others injured in a series of explosions in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa on Tuesday morning, police sources told Xinhua.

About five explosive devices targeting the houses of the Houthi group leaders in central Sanaa went off at dawn, a police said on condition of anonymity. The blasts killed one person and injured two others, all of whom belong to the Shiite Houthi group that controls the capital.

The explosions also damaged several residential buildings and cars, and caused panic in the capital.

Local residents said that the five big explosions could be heard across the capital. They said the explosions occurred in the early morning when few people were on the streets. The Houthi group has sealed off the areas after the blasts.

Security officials said one of the Houthi leaders that were targeted in the blasts had previously called for eliminating terrorist groups. Security teams have started to collect evidence for investigation.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the Houthi group has been fighting the al-Qaida network and its allied Sunni tribes in the country's southern regions since the Houthi group expanded influence southward after it captured Sanaa in September.

The security situation in the Arab country has worsened after the 2011 political upheaval severely weakened government control. Tensions increased after the Houthis took over control of Sanaa in September.

In recent months, the capital Sanaa and several southern provinces have seen frequent assassinations and conflicts, as the Houthi group was trying to seize regions which were under control of the al-Qaida group.
