Bolivarian Alliance blames U.S. policies on Venezuela, Cuba

HAVANA, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- A summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) has blamed U.S. policies on Venezuela and Cuba.

A statement approved Sunday at the summit condemned the approval by the U.S. Congress of sanctions against Venezuela and expressed the bloc's solidarity with the South American country.

The statement demanded the United States change its policy toward Cuba, including the immediate lift of the economic blockade, an end to subversive actions, and removal of Cuba from the list of countries that sponsor terrorism.

The ALBA countries supported Cuba's participation in the next Summit of the Americas in Panama in April 2015.

ALBA was founded in 2004 by then Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and former Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

The bloc, which aims to counter U.S. influence in the region, groups Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Dominica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Cuba and Venezuela. Grenada and St. Kitts and Nevis officially joined the bloc at the one-day summit.
