Pyongyang accuses Seoul of taking lead in human rights resolution on DPRK

PYONGYANG, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Saturday accused South Korea of taking the lead in the adoption of a recent UN human rights resolution on the country, which Pyongyang insisted was based on "lies and fabrications."

The Third Committee of the 69th United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution, drafted by the European Union and Japan, that recommends the Security Council refer the DPRK to the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

South Korea "took the lead in fabricating the human rights resolution, " which "aimed to defame the high authority and influence of the DPRK" and "justify the moves for confrontation," the secretariat of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of Korea said in a statement.

Pyongyang called it "a ridiculous daydream" to subvert the DPRK socialism by kicking up human rights "rackets," the statement said.

It said the DPRK will neither sit on the sidelines nor forgive whoever challenges its dignity and social system on the pretext of human rights record.

In a statement issued Thursday, a DPRK foreign ministry spokesman strongly denounced the UN resolution, saying that Pyongyang is compelled by U.S. hostility "not to exercise restraint any longer in conducting a new nuclear test."
