Frequent Kabul suicide attacks raise fear of security lapse

KABUL, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's fortified capital city Kabul has been the scene of a series of suicide bombings over the past month, which have claimed several lives, with the latest attack occurring Wednesday night leaving four people dead and three others injured.

Afghan political observers blame a security lapse for the Taliban's penetration into the city and conducting deadly suicide bombings, which mostly harm non-combatants and innocent civilians.

"Repeated suicide attacks in Kabul speaks of Taliban penetration into security entities, otherwise it would be difficult if not impossible for the Taliban to conduct three suicide attacks within a week in the fortified city of Kabul," political analyst Khan Mohammad Daneshjo told Xinhua.

Security is tight elsewhere in Kabul and police check any suspicious cars and people entering the city or roaming on streets, Daneshjo said, adding that without cooperation from inside Kabul, no insurgent would dare to enter the city.

A suicide car bomb struck the southern part of Kabul last Sunday, claiming the lives of three civilians and injuring 32 others including a female, lawmaker Shukria. Taliban militants fighting the government to regain power had claimed responsibility for the bloody attack.

Two days later on Tuesday an identical suicide bombing targeted a private company in the eastern part of Kabul, leaving three bombers dead and injuring three civilians including two guards of the company.

In the latest violent suicide bombing, which targeted the guests of foreigners known as Green Village on Wednesday night, four attackers were killed and three civilians, including two foreigners, sustained injures.

"Necessary security measures have already been put in place to ensure security in Kabul. There are security cameras and security balloons in the sky as apparatus to ensure security in the city," Daneshjo who is also an editor-in-chief of a weekly said.

"Ordinary people cannot carry guns, so how is it possible to take an explosive-laden vehicle along with three or four terrorists equipped with suicide vests and light weapons into the city?" Daneshjo quizzed.

A couple of weeks ago a suicide attack inside the compound of the Kabul Police Headquarters for which the Taliban claimed responsibility left one policeperson dead and injured six others.

Kabul police inspector general, General Mohammad Zahir, told local media that the suicide bomber had been taken inside the police compound by a vehicle, promising more details would be made public after further investigation.

"The explosive-laden vehicles are taken inside the city in connivance with someone from inside, otherwise, no terrorist can enter the fortified city. It is virtually impossible to enter without inside help for the terrorists, which is our home," said lawmaker Nawab Mangal.
