BEIJING, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will pay an official visit to China on Nov. 6-10 and attend events and meetings related to the 22nd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in Beijing. The following is some key information about the prime minister.
Harper was born in Toronto on April 30, 1959. He was educated at the University of Calgary, where he received both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in economics.
In 1993, Harper was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a member of the Reform Party. In 2002, he was re-elected. Since then, he has won consecutive terms.
In 2004, he became the leader of the Conservative Party. In February 2006, Harper was sworn in as Canada's 22nd prime minister. In October 2008, the Conservative Party won a federal election and he assumed premiership again.
In May 2011, he led the Conservatives to their third consecutive election victory and was sworn into office as prime minister for a third term.
He paid two official visits to China respectively in December 2009 and February 2012.
Harper is married and has a son and a daughter.
