HO CHI MINH CITY, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will build an international-standard seaport on Phu Quoc Island of southern Kien Giang province which can accommodate huge cruise ships, local Saigon Times daily reported Thursday.
The Ministry of Transport and the provincial authorities agreed the seaport would go up near Duong Dong town to make it easy for the province to attract investors to the project and international travelers.
According to a blueprint, the pier of the seaport, which is estimated to cost 1.25 trillion VND (59 million U.S. dollars), would be 400 meters long and 19 meters wide. A 1,020-meter-long bridge would be built to connect the pier with the shore.
In addition to cruise ships that can carry 5,000-6,000 passengers each, the seaport is expected to handle container vessels.
Investors are encouraged to develop the seaport under a public- private partnership format, according to the transport ministry.
Located on the Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand marine economic corridor, Phu Quoc Island district covers more than 589 sq km with a population of over 96,940. It comprises 27 islands with Phu Quoc being the largest. It received nearly 325,000 holidaymakers in the first seven months of this year.
