BRUSSELS, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso will join world leaders at the NATO Wales Summit on Thursday and Friday in a substantially different security environment caused by the instability in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
According to an EU statement issued on Tuesday, Barroso will take part in the session on Afghanistan, together with European Council President Van Rompuy. High Representative and Vice-President Catherine Ashton will also take part in some sessions.
Barroso is expected to reiterate the EU long-term commitment to Afghanistan, exemplified in new strategy and funding until 2020 -- including for the policing commitments made at the Chicago Summit in 2012.
Leaders will also discuss the implications of Russia's actions in Eastern Europe.
