Putin says Russia may quit ECHR jurisdiction

English.news.cn   2014-08-14 21:04:26

MOSCOW, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday accused the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) of politicizing many judgements, saying Moscow may theoretically withdraw from its jurisdiction.

The ECHR has poorly performed the role it was originally set for, and "simply fulfill some political function," Putin told a meeting with Russian lawmakers in Crimea's resort city of Yalta.

"If this practice gets stronger, it is possible" that Russia would pull itself out, he was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying, while adding that "this issue is still not on our agenda so far."

On July 31, the Russian Justice Ministry lashed out at an ECHR ruling that Moscow should pay 2.6 billion U.S. dollars in compensation to shareholders of former Russian oil company Yukos, calling it neither fair nor impartial.
