Turkey to sell more food to Russia amid Ukraine crisis

English.news.cn   2014-08-13 21:56:46

ANKARA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Turkey is expected to export more foodstuffs to Russia as the country banned imports of those from the United States, the European Union (EU) and other countries, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported on Wednesday.

Turkey will benefit from Russian sanctions targeting the EU and U.S. products, as Russia seeks for an alternative supplier of food imports, especially fruit and vegetables, according to Turkey's Agriculture Ministry.

Russia on Wednesday banned imports of fruit, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, scallops, milk and dairy from the United States, the EU, Australia, Canada and Norway in retaliation for Western sanctions against Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine.

Russia primarily wants to increase its imports of traditional agricultural products such as fruit and vegetables from Turkey, Russian Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fyodorov said, adding that the import "will expand the volume of trade between two nations."
