More than 100 U.S. military advisers being sent to Iraq: report

English.news.cn   2014-08-13 07:46:01

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 additional U.S. military advisers are being sent to Iraq to look at relief options for local civilians trapped by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants in northern Iraq's mountainous area, CNN reported on Tuesday.

The military advisers would look at humanitarian relief efforts to consider how to get thousands of Yezidi Iraqis off Sinjar Mountain, the report said.

U.S. President Barack Obama had previously authorized sending as many as 300 advisers to that country. Currently, 250 U.S. military personnel are in Iraq and are directly involved in the already-approved mission of running two joint operations centers and assessing the capabilities of Iraqi force, according to the report.

On Monday, U.S. Defense Department announced that U.S. Air Force and Navy aircraft have executed 15 targeted airstrikes to protect U.S. citizens and forces in and around Erbil as well as assisting in the breakup of ISIL over the past four days.

In addition, the United States and Britain have flown 14 humanitarian airdrops since Aug. 7 to Yezidi refugees in the Sinjar Mountains, providing more than 310 bundles of food, water and medical supplies to the refugees there.
