KIEV, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- A total of 568 Ukrainian troops have been killed since the start of government's military operation against pro-independence insurgents in eastern regions nearly four months ago, a military spokesman said on Monday.
Around 2,120 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the confrontation with insurgents, Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said.
Over the past 24 hours, six Ukrainian soldiers died and 24 others were wounded in the conflict, Lysenko said.
Intense fighting has been raging in Ukraine's restive east since mid-April, when the government troops launched offensives against militants to regain control over seized cities and towns.
According to the UN estimates, the conflict has left over 1,500 people dead and at least 4,390 others wounded.
