WARSAW, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) --The European Union decided to decrease the fishing limits for the Baltic cod next year causing distress for the Polish fishermen, local media reported Tuesday.
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) has decided to reduce the cod fishing limit by 56 percent due to the fact that the population of this fish in the Baltic Sea is constantly declining.
The surprisingly high cutting of limit seems to trouble restaurateurs and fishermen as fresh cod is the best selling fish and one of the most popular dishes sold in the Polish seaside.
The fishermen’s main distress is the inevitable rise of the cod wholesale price which will directly affect the selling price. Moreover, the fishing which has been barely profitable so far would become more uneconomical under the reduced limit.
Scientists emphasize however, that the population of Baltic cod need to be protected in order to avoid extinction.
