BRATISLAVA, Aug.3 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rain and storm hit Western Slovakia and its capital Bratislava on Sunday afternoon.
Pavel Ihnat of the Slovak Fire and Rescue Corps Presidium (HaZZ) said that 51 HaZZ members were dispatched along with 28 members of voluntary fire brigades. These crews drained the water that had accumulated on the roads, underpasses and cellars of houses and flats.
According to Ihnat, the fire brigade had to intervene in all Bratislava boroughs. The HaZZ operational centre is still dispatching its units to all affected areas of Bratislava after the storm.
The Bratislava city police warned that a number of roads have been flooded and are thus impassable.
The storm has also caused problems for Bratislava public transport.
"Access complications have occurred due to the intense rainfall. The situation in the centre has already been stabilised. City-wide transport isn't running according to the timetable, however. Trams and trolleybuses aren't running to the Eastern Bratislava´s boroughs," said spokesperson of Bratislava public transport company Adriana Volfova.
The damages in Bratislava were only limited unlike heavy rains and floods, which last week devastated part of the Northern Slovakia.
According to the Slovak Environment Ministry, removing the damages in Vratna dolina will take two to three months with the costs estimated at 2 million euros (2.68 million U.S. dollars).
